About

This About section is kind of a living document. I’ll probably revisit it from time to time to try and shape it up. It may be somewhat random, but I’m not always the greatest at writing or talking about myself.

This page also dates to about 2005-2006. It needs updating, but I’ll get around to that eventually.

About the Author: Philosopher, überGeek Hacker, Mastermind: Perhaps these things can only best define me in my own mind. In truth, I am a nerd or geek, depending on your preference. Not quite yet a Guru, until I write some phenomenal book on some technology though I do aspire to Guru-hood. The Jung Typology Test does describe me as a Mastermind Rational, so we can stick with that as truthful. I also like to think of myself as a leader, but that is something best left up to others.

As far as being a Geek, I came rather late to my calling. We didn’t have a computer until I was 8 or 9, but then we weren’t allowed to use it for much besides school work at the time. It was a Compaq Prolinea 486/33. That same computer was later handed down to me at the age of 16, and I immediately began to disassemble it. From there I embarked on a strange, yet time honored and traditional path to geekdom. I began learning as much as possible about the machine, from hardware to software. I installed fresh operating systems, stayed up all night learning HTML (I know, not exactly real code but that’s how the story goes), and just about anything I could. Since then I’ve immersed myself in Linux and have recently began learning to code. I consider myself Systems Administrator material, but have this urge to write code and expand myself.

About this site: This site is my personal home of the web. The real purpose of the site is to gain back what I feel is some lost creativity. I used to write quite heavily, on various topics. I was initially hesitant to start a blog, never having liked revealing too much personal information to complete strangers. Eventually I decided that I wanted to write some things, just get them out there and let the words flow. I don’t know how many people will end up reading the site, but that’s not really the point. It’s a self-exercise and that’s about it. The site is really just a place for me to jot things down, from rants to observations to whatever the hell I think of. I have lots of ideas flowing through my head, sometimes composing entire diatribes in my head, but I don’t write them down and they’re lost. I want to change that. Not everything on the site is public, as some things are too personal for the world to be reading.

Site History: Originally this site was hosted under the Salens.org domain. It was just a bunch of simple HTML pages detailing random things in my life and also hosted a photo gallery. When I did decide to enter the blogosphere, I checked my option and finally decided on using WordPress. I started somewhere before version 1.0, I believe. I stuck with WordPress for a year or so, not making a whole lot of posts, mostly tweaking things under the hood.

It was during this time that I recieved a few complaints from family that I was being too vulgar (which I was, but hey – this was my site). I decided to split my personal page off to the current site of jesse.salens.org and leave the family & friends part clean.

After a while I decided to try PostNuke, just for the sake of learning it. PostNuke ended up being way more than I needed, kind of bulky and a sometimes pain in the ass. I switched back to WordPress, and am currently on version 2.0. I think I’ve tweaked the site now enough to where I’m happy, and hopefully can get some damn posts done.
